It was a night of excitement, groove and talent display at the University town of Nsukka in Enugu State, as Nigerian Breweries stormed the city with its Star Music Trek last weekend. Artistes such as Tuface Idibia, MI, Olamide, Naeto C and Phyno were on parade at the show codenamed ‘Nsukka Rocks’ and held at the township stadium.
As early as 7pm, the arena was already charged and bubbling with choice music blasting from every corner courtesy of celebrity disc jockeys, DJ Tony Blaze and DJ Neptune. The show was coordinated by popular On-Air-personality, Dotun of Cool FM, who put up amazing flash displays at every interval to ensure the show’s tempo was kept at steady flow.
Meanwhile, it was also a night for the up and coming artistes in Enugu as they were as well offered ample chance to display their talents. Hours before the show, the budding artistes had thronged the venue in their hundreds with their CDs, requesting for opportunity to perform. According to the organizers, over hundred of them were screened, out of which 15 were selected to perform. And interestingly, but for one or two cases, the wanabes didn’t disappoint the crowd. They were alive on stage such that they were able to get the crowd soaked with intense groove even before the arrival of the stars. Some of them are Omega X1, Nite Sadam, Omegooh, De Beans, Sky Flesh, and Young Square among others.
The eventual arrival of the star artistes marked another phase of the show with Naeto C coming on stage first at about 11.50pm. Naeto was amazing like never before. He performed several of his hit numbers including ‘Ringtone’, ‘Tony Montana’, ‘Gbogbo’, ‘Top of the Morning’ and ‘10 Over 10’ among others.
Phyno simply took the crowd to the next level of ecstasy. With his infusion of Igbo vernacular in his raps, it was easy for the Enugu-born artiste to win the people’s hearts. And when he introduced his popular hit, ‘Ndi Ala’, the crowd took over as if they wrote the song. At 1:15am, it was the turn of Yoruba rapper, Olamide, who was fantastic on stage as usual. With his scintillating dance steps, he made his fans scramble for space to dance along with him as he performed his ‘Omotosho’ and other hit tracks. And as he went down low with his choice track, ‘Go Down Low’, the crowd went high up in frenzy of excitement.
Meanwhile, as the night got more chilling, the show gathered greater momentum. And as celebrated rapper, MI, came in to replace Olamide at about 1:50 am, the atmosphere changed again with the tempo stepping further up. With his songs on the background, he creatively carried the crowd along and also tried to make the show more participatory. By calling few girls up stage and subjecting them to some dancing competition, the rapper won the hearts of the people who turned Oliver Twist as he tried to wind up. He had earlier called up a particular girl and dramatically removed his wrist watch, fastened it on the girl’s wrist, knelt down and pleaded with her to accept him. That wowed the crowd.
When his time was up, MI had to employed tactical withdrawal method when the crowd became relentless in asking for more from him. He remained on stage until Tuface emerged. They put up a brief collabo, thereby shooting the show to an unprecedented crescendo before MI formerly introduced Mr. Idibia to the crowd and stepped aside. By then, the dust that was intermittently raised by the crowd had yielded to the chilling dews of the night.
However, Tuface came well prepared. He came with his band and did everything live. As he took over the stage, he started by appreciating he crowd in their lingo. “Nsukka Dalu nu”, thereby stealing the show. And he played a little beyond 4am.
